Where the hell IS Walsenburg?

Where the hell is Walsenburg?!

This seems to be the usual response I receive when someone asks me where I live... I try to stall... say something reasonably vague such as "Beautiful Southern Colorado" or "South of Denver and East of Durango"... but invariably someone presses me for the actual name of our rural Colorado town, only to be more confused than they were when I was being purposefully vague.

So where and what exactly is this bastion of beauty I call home?

We are a small town, in a rural county in Southern Colorado... the midway point between here and there... a place with no Super Walmarts (for better and for worse) and the gateway to the Highway of Legends with it's amazing landscapes and varied geology.

We have herds of elk, deer, and cattle roaming the countryside. Lakes full of trout and bass and some of the most amazing fall foliage this side of Vermont.

We should be a big town... all grown up and full of convenience for the weary traveler (we are at the crossroads of I-25 and Hwy 160) and yet we haven't quite gotten there. Which honestly is a good thing.

What Walsenburg is tends to be more than it seems... this is true for many places that we pass through on the road of life. Take a walk with me as we explore this valley and discover some of it's amazing secrets.
